GCU London Club

‌Now in its third year, the GCU London Club has developed strong partnerships with primary schools within walking distance to GCU London, in the local community of Tower Hamlets. Since the highly successful Olympic Inspire project ‘A Tale of Two Sporting Cities' that brought together St Matthias Church of England Primary in Tower Hamlets and St Bartholomew’s Primary School in Glasgow, the London Club has developed new links within the community. The London Club now works with three primary schools: St Matthias Church of England Primary, St Anne’s Catholic Primary and Canon Barnett Primary.

The London Club works with school pupils and families in the community to raise educational aspirations and build key life skills and confidence in its members. The London Club offers targeted projects designed to enhance the school curriculum, through the provision of unique learning opportunities, and utilises undergraduate student mentors as positive role models and cultural ambassadors.‌

The core programme areas encompassed by the London Club’s activities are:

Arts & Languages

Y3 Digital Book Project

Adding to the ever successful 'Molly and Cally Adventure Series’, this project enables Year 3 pupils to further explore an area of their class topic or learning theme by researching, writing and illustrating their own book. With the help of an author, artist, drama leader and a student mentor role model, pupils are able to express their creativity both individually and as a group to develop ideas for their story and the accompanying artwork. GCU Graphic Design students then convert their work into a book. The project concludes with a book launch celebration with family and friends, where pupils are shown the digital animated version of their book before being gifted their very own paper copy.

Reception Year Campus Visit & Eat Well Song

Starting in schools on the first day of this two day project, pre-school reception pupils are visited by student mentors and drama leaders to talk about healthy eating and learn the Eat Well Song. Working together pupils discover different food groups and their benefits before reciting the ‘Eat Well Song’. The following day pupils, along with parents and family members, visit GCU London to meet Molly and her mum, who help the children understand where they are in their own educational journey. Children take part in university-related activities designed for their age and key stage while parents are invited to take a tour of the campus and find out more about the London Club.
