Fire Risk Engineering is a relatively new discipline within the construction industry, driven by developments in fire safety legislation.
The GCU programme, one of the few offered in the UK, was developed in close partnership with the Fire and Rescue Service. It is unique in its focus on fire safety design and regulations. It was the first in the UK to achieve academic exemption by the Institution of Fire Engineers at MIFireE level.
The course has also been approved by the UK Engineering Council for IEng standard route and partial fulfilment of CEng standard route. Risk management, forecasting, problem solving and communication are all part of the programme, which has strong links with consultants and regulators who share their knowledge through guest lectures, case study materials and site visits. A number of Fire and Rescue Service Officers are associate lecturers.
You will have the opportunity to study abroad or undertake an accredited work placement, as well as an optional work placement.
Career prospects are excellent with the fire services, construction companies, consultancy, offshore oil industry, and local authorities in the UK and overseas.
Some of our graduates are now working in consultancy in the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and the USA as well as throughout the UK.

Applicants with a HND or equivalent qualifications and relevant experience, including evidence of CPD may be accepted onto the programme
Students whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold the equivalent of an Academic IELTS test score of 6.0 with no element less than 5.5.

GCU’s flexible entry policies exist to allow relevant work experience and prior learning to be considered towards standard entry or advanced entry into a course. Students have the opportunity for International Exchange. This could be for one trimester or a whole year study at another institution, often at one of our European partners, where courses are offered in English. Currently students taking this option do so at Year 3 and gain credits towards their degree.
The BEng (Hons) Fire Risk Engineering has been recognised as an approve course with academic exemption by the Institution of Fire Engineers. It is also accredited by the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.
